How To Colour Hair At Home (While Salons Are Closed)

Apr 6, 2021

If you’re looking to mix up your look while salons are still closed, then listen up! We share our top tips on how to colour your hair at home, so you can flaunt a showstopping shade that makes you feel unstoppable. It’s time to get creative…

10 Tips On How To Colour Your Hair At Home

1. Choose The Right Hair Colour

First things first, you need to choose your hair colour. While it’s best to leave the permanent hair dye to the professionals, semi-permanent shades, powders and spray-ins are great temporary solutions.

Of course, our first choice for showstopping colour would be FUDGE PAINTBOX. With 10 fabulous shades to choose from (and even more if you mix and match to create your custom look), you can flaunt a vibrant, showstopping new shade in just 30 minutes. Plus, the semi-permanent colour will last between 3 and 30 washes!

2. Make Sure You Have Enough Hair Colour

There’s nothing worse than running out of product halfway through colouring your locks. Not only is it really inconvenient, but your finished look is likely to be uneven too. That’s why we always recommend buying multiple tubes of your chosen shade. For jaw-length hair, you’ll need 2 tubes, while long hair could require 4 or 5 tubes – so stock up! Trust us, too much is always better.

 3. Never Skip A Strand Test

If there’s one hair colouring tip you should always follow, it’s this: never skip a strand test (you won’t need a skin test with Paintbox). Though it may be tempting, this quick test will 1) confirm that you like the colour, and 2) check that it suits your skin tone.

Simply colour a few trimmed or hidden strands, leave for 30 minutes, then rinse off and dry to see the finished shade. If you love the look, go for it!

4. Prep Your Hair

As Fudge Paintbox should always be applied onto towel-dried tresses, you’ll want to wash your hair just before colouring.

One of our favourite shampoos? The Fudge Luminizer shampoo! Infused with a lightweight micellar oil complex and our unique Opti-PLEX™ technologyit gently cleanses, moisturises and illuminates each strand, while strengthening the hair too.

5. Apply A Lip Balm To Your Skin

Yes, you read that right! When hair colouring at home, be sure to protect your skin to avoid getting any colour product on your face or neck.

One of our top hair colouring tips? Apply a thick layer of lip balm along your forehead, ears and neck to protect the exposed skin around the hairline. You can then wipe the balm away with a soft cotton pad when you’ve finished colouring.

6. Colour Your Towel-Dried Hair

Your hair now washed and towel-dried, it’s time to apply your colour. To ensure a flawless, even coverage simply:

  • Apply your chosen shade to your roots, then carefully comb it through to the ends to evenly distribute the product.
  • Allow the colour to develop for 15 to 30 minutes.
  • Rinse well with warm water until the water runs clear.
  • Condition your hair with our DAMAGE REWIND RECONSTRUCTING CONDITIONER to leave hair 95% stronger, 8 times smoother and twice as soft!

Fudge Hair Colouring At Home Tip: Always use gloves and cover your shoulders to avoid staining your hands and clothes.

7. Use A Shower Cap

Here’s another great hair colouring tip: To make sure your colour develops properly, place a shower cap over your coloured locks to help them better absorb the pigments. It will prevent the formula from dripping onto your clothes too!

Usually, when hair colouring at home, cap should be worn for 15 to 30 minutes, but check the packaging on your product for exact instructions.

10. Use Dry Shampoo To Extend Time Between Washes
