How To Use Dry Shampoo Correctly

Apr 6, 2021

Who doesn’t love dry shampoo? The ultimate saviour on days when you don’t have time for a full cleansing ritual, it instantly refreshes, adds volume and allows you to rock second day hair.

If you haven’t fallen in love with dry shampoo yet, you’ve either never used it or you’re not applying it right. So, here’s a guide on how to use dry shampoo to reap the full benefits. Trust us, you’ll soon be wondering how you ever lived without it!

How To Use Dry Shampoo

Hold It At A Distance

The first rule of using dry shampoo for hairAlways hold it 15cm away when spraying. Too close and it could become too concentrated in one area (we’re talking wet, chalky patches and unflattering residue), too far away and it won’t effectively soak up excess oil.

Fifteen centimetres is the perfect spraying distance. You should also continuously move the dry shampoo from the front of your head to the back while spraying to avoid over-applying in one area.

Spray It All Over

If you’re only spraying your dry shampoo onto the visible parts of your roots, or worse just along your parting, then listen up! To make the most of your dry shampoo, section your hair twice, then spritz the roots between each section. This will better mimic the effects of shampoo, absorbing all excess oils, rather than just those on the top layer of your hair.

Brush It Through

One of the biggest mistakes you can make when trying to use dry shampoo is forgetting to brush it through. It’s a recipe for residue and itchiness!

Instead, spray onto your roots, leave for 1 or 2 minutes to soak up the excess oil, then massage in. Finish by brushing through to remove any remaining product.

Use Alongside A Hairdryer

It might sound unconventional, but trust us, one of the best ways to use dry shampoo is alongside a hairdryer. The heat helps distribute the dry shampoo from the scalp down to the mid-lengths, refreshing hair from root to tip.

After applying dry shampoo, blast your tresses with the hairdryer for 1 to 2 minutes, then brush and style as normal.

Don’t Apply For More Than Two Days In A Row

You wouldn’t just keep layering makeup on day after day without washing it off first, right? The same goes for dry shampoo. It’s a great second or third day refresher, but it doesn’t replace your shampoo and shouldn’t be applied for days on end.

Aim to wash your hair at least twice a week, paying particular attention to your scalp and roots.

It isn’t always easy to find the best dry shampoo for you. From aerosols to newly-released pastes, mousses and powders, it can be difficult to choose.
